How to choose the tread of winter Tyre

How to correctly select the tread pattern for operation of the car in winter.

On snow loams and icy roads on summer rubber you will not leave far. In such conditions, rubber just villages and driving a car becomes just dangerous. That is why, with the arrival of the first cold, when the air temperature drops below 5 degrees Celsius, drivers rush to shift their vehicles into a more suitable winter rubber. It is much softer, so in negative temperature the car surely holds the road.

The main difference is in the tread pattern. Winter models have deeper, with more grooves, ribs and sharp corners pattern. Also compared to summer rubber it has several times more lamels, which allows to improve adhesion to the road. Often the tread pattern of winter tyres is V-shaped, directional. The rapid withdrawal of water or snow is provided by central grooves, which in winter rubber number from two to four pieces.

Two types of pattern design are identified:

  • European;
  • Scandinavian.

Both types differ in width of grooves, frequency of checkers. Scandinavian (marking Q (160 km/h), R (170 km/h), T (190 km/h)) are made for more severe winters and better adapt to changes in weather conditions. Such tyres are best used on snowy or icy roads at temperatures below zero. Rubber for this type is used as soft as possible, which allows to operate tires in severe frost. Some manufacturers add silicon crumb to the rubber composition. The tread pattern is deep, has many diamond-shaped and rectangular checkers, literally cut , which are far apart. Such tires literally push the ice crust. But this type of tread is not suitable for fast-riding fans. Braking time due to rubber features increases, so it can be dangerous to drive on such tyres. It is possible to further cover the rubber with spikes.

But the European type (marking H (210 km/h), V (240 km/h)) is more suitable for mild winter, rainy weather, slightly cold snow or melted roads. They are better used in urban conditions, on snow-cleared streets. They are the most suitable option for “riders.” An important plus of this type of tyre is the possibility of operation on asphalt surface from mid-autumn to the beginning of freezing. The optimum temperature of use of this rubber is about zero. The European type has a directional symmetrical or asymmetric pattern with small lamellae, allowing for good handling of melt water. Tires include harder rubber, unlike the Nordic type.

There is no clear answer to the question of which type of tread is best chosen. Each rubber is designed for certain operating conditions. Everything depends on your territorial location and the inherent climate of the terrain. When buying it is also worth taking into account how often you visit the village in winter or simply leave the city, the presence of an icy canopy near the parking lot or garage, the condition of roads, how often snow falls in your area. If winter is more warm, rainy, and you choose to village only a couple of times a month, it is worth giving preference to the European type. But if you live outside the city, roads and access roads are rarely cleared, and winter pleases with regular precipitation and strong frost, it is still better to acquire the Nordic type of tyres.
