Renault Duster is quite common in Russia. Such folk “love” is explained by the affordable price, the lack of flexibility in operation, the simple construction, the large road clearance and the presence of a full drive in some sets.
Duster ‘s undeniable merit is also his “unassuming” suspension, which feels good both on and off the road. All the above factors make this car a desirable purchase, both in the salon at the dealer and on the secondary market.

So what are the weaknesses of the Renault Duster gasoline, what nuances to pay attention to when buying a car with mileage?
Domestic Duster motorists are offered with four petrol motors:
• F4R gasoline engine of 2.0 liters and 135 hp (installed on the first generation until 2015);
• F4R gasoline motor of 2.0 liters and 143 hp (started to be installed after restyling);
• K4M gasoline engine of 1.6 liters and 102 hp (until 2015);
• H4M gasoline motor with volume 1.6. Liters and 114 hp (engine from Nissan, installed since 2015, produced in the Russian Federation).
Duster ‘s long-standing operation of the Russian assembly showed that all four engines “digest” domestic fuel well and withstand our operating conditions. Motors that “rolled back” 200 and more thousand km were not distinguished by “fat oil,” their power did not decrease significantly. But, of course, without small “kosyaks” did not cost. The motor F4R
It is the most common engine in the line, is popular with Russian automobiles. Sold cars of the first generation in more than half of cases were aggregated by him (on the territory of the EAEU). Such information goes from mouth to mouth very long ago, when 10-12 years ago such problems were distinguished by engine Reno Megan. Since then the motors have been refined, Duster has no such problems.
For those who doubt: listen to the heated engine. If the phase regulator is faulty, the gasoline ICE will sound like diesel.
In 2015, the phase regulator design was updated once more, the exhaust was changed and the electronics were reconfigured, which gave the engine an additional 8 hp, and F4R appeared with 143 forces. As for the real problems, the F4R has a throttle gasket, which over time starts to get worse at the cold winter.
Complaints were also noted about the noise generated by the rollers of the additional equipment driven by the Gas distribution mechanism belt. By the way, it is necessary to change every 60 thousand km of mileage, in case of belt break this motor has no chance: valves necessarily meet with pistons.
There are no more problems with this engine. There are problems with ignition coils and plugs, but they are caused by leakage of glass washer nozzles. It is necessary either to replace them or to protect the pork wells from ingress of moisture into them. A car with this engine, ICPP and four-wheel drive consumes just over 10 litres of fuel per hundred km in urban mode. On the track, if you go calmly, you can meet 7.5 l. At that, the motor normally feeds 92-th gasoline. In the case of an “automatic machine,” the flow rate increases by almost two litres.
The motor К4М
1.6-litre К4М (exact volume – 1598 cm3) produces 102 forces. Domestic motors consider it not powerful enough for this car. But they ‘re not quite right. Although the power of the engine and the value of torque at it is less than at the two-litre, but at the transmission of the machine with such ICE different transmission ratios, and in practice the car goes very fast, it is necessary only not to be afraid to spin the engine up to 4 thousand revolutions.
There is even insider information from one of the engineers who designed Duster that the originally four-wheel drive version had to be fitted with this more balanced engine. In the EU, this model used to be sold only with it and with a diesel engine, but there it was Dacia.
This powertrain does not have any typical “bolts,” except for the above-described minor problem with throttle laying. But here ‘s gasoline it can consume more than a two-litre. The engine can easily pass 400-500 thousand km with proper maintenance. Replacement of Gas distribution mechanism belt – once in 60 thousand km, valve clearance is adjusted by means of hydraulic compensators.
The motor H4M
This engine from Nissan began to be installed on Duster in 2015. Working volume – 1.6 liters, power – 114 hp. The engine is not bad, it has excellent elasticity. But its unit is made of aluminium, and therefore – cannot be repaired. There are no hydraulic compensators, valve clearances are adjusted by washers, motor design is very simple. Instead of a Gas distribution mechanism belt, a chain is used, which pleases many. Up to 150,000, there ‘s no problem with her.
From the weaknesses of this ICE, it is possible to distinguish the need to remove the intake manifold in order to change the candles. And it is necessary to do it once every 30 thousand runs, preferably at STO. The engine is afraid of overheating.
The life of this power train is up to 350 thousand km. Fuel consumption: in the city about 9.5 liters, along the route – slightly more than 7. It is produced in the Russian Federation.
What to choose, decide exclusively to the buyer. The optimal version is with gasoline two-litre 143-strong unit, manual gearbox and four-wheel drive.
What else is worth paying attention to? When examining Duster on the secondary market, pay attention to the body in the area of the luggage door near the chrome-plated Duster emblem, the edge in the area of the bumper, the rear wheel arches (their front part is sand with wheels). See if the mastic of the back of the roof drains has been cracked, if the paint and varnish coating has worn out in places where it comes into contact with door seals.
Pay attention to the Steering booster tube in the area where it is attached to the sub frame. If quality maintenance and competent operation of Duster, 150-170 thousand it will pass without delivering any problems to the owner. Further it may be necessary to replace joints of Drive line, Equal angular velocity hinge, shockabsorbers, working cylinder of clutch. But there is nothing eternal, these problems are not particularly costly on finance.
